About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated candidate with experience in airside operations to join the teams as an Airside Operations Officer. You  will be accountable on a 24-hour basis for maintaining a high level of airfield and apron safety, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and local management instructions.  

The successful candidate will deliver excellent standards of customer service to internal and external customers, as well as campus partners. You will be part of the team responsible for the efficient airside operation of Edinburgh Airport including effective and accurate stand allocation, providing airfield services and maintaining the highest levels of safety.

Please note this is a 42 hour position involving shift work.
 

About the recruitment process

There will be a 2 stage recruitment process for this role. Interested candidates should submit the online application form at their earliest opportunity. This will be followed by a shortlisting process, and if successful, candidates will be invited to an assessment day consisting of a group exercise, written assessment and interview in mid May.

What you’ll be doing 

  • You will champion health and safety and be proactive in managing this including carrying out regular safety inspections of the airfield, monitoring personnel working airside and completing wildlife hazard management patrols. You will develop and follow through on solutions identified.
  • Deal with often contentious issues in the daily operation, diplomatically but effectively, and with minimum supervision from the management team.
  • Maintain an enhanced knowledge of all live computer programs in the Airside Operations Hub, including Chroma Fusion, Chroma Assign and CCTV to plan, amend and relocate stands on a real time basis.
  • Make informed decisions within strict guidelines of the CAA, ICAO and HSE, and use your own judgement to carry out daily duties and respond to emergency situations.
  • Working as part of a fast paced and dynamic team, you will clearly identify and communicate with campus partners including Police Scotland, UK Border Force, Airport Fire Service, Security, Engineering, and the Terminal team.
  • You will keep up to date with changes in legislation and processes that affect the service provided to our customers.
  • Provide marshalling assistance and safety escorts to aircraft, emergency services and control authorities.
  • During winter operations, you will support the operational winter plan, assisting the ‘Snow Manager’ and Airside Operations Duty Manager (AODM) to return the airfield to fully operational as quickly as possible. You will undertake airfield anti-icing/de-icing operations, whilst minimising the environmental impact
  • Provide key support during operational emergency situations, assisting and liaising with the Airport Operations Manager and Airside Operations Duty Manager, to ensure a safe and efficient process and return to normal operations as quickly as possible.

  • Problem solving – you use a wide range of communication skills when dealing with customer enquiries and sensitive issues to come up with a solution.
  • Communication – you can communicate clearly at all levels of the organisation and with external organisations both orally and in writing with diplomacy where required.
  • IT – you have the ability to use and master bespoke computer packages.

Essential requirements:

  • Due to the nature of the role, the successful candidate will be required to gain a Counter Terrorist Check. For this reason, candidates must have been living in the UK continuously for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Candidate must be able to attain an Airside Driving Permit for Apron, Manoeuvring and Runway areas immediately after appointment.
  • Must achieve Category ‘C’ driving licence after appointment
  • An excellent standard of Radiotelephony proficiency must be achieved after appointment
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Firearms Certificate
  • A practical knowledge and understanding of airside operational practices and procedures, including proven and varied airside experience
  • A good standard of education, preferably educated to higher education level  
The following additional items are nice to have, but are not essential for the role:
  • Airside driving experience
  • Understanding of the operational areas and topography of Edinburgh Airport
  • Safety, environmental or airside operations qualification
  • Understanding of contingency planning and business continuity plans
