Read a blog below written by Alex Eccles about being an Engineering Technician at Edinburgh Airport!

When I tell people I’m an Engineer at Edinburgh Airport, they assume that you fix planes. However, the role is far more varied than just planes. It’s technical and critical to the smooth running of Scotland’s busiest airport, and what we want to do is provide a greater understanding of the role and the variation within it.

Growing with the airport

I joined Edinburgh Airport as an Engineering Technician when passenger numbers were much lower, and in 2024, 15 million people passed through the airport. That growth has increased the demands on our assets, and on the engineering team.

The airport is a 24/7 operation and our job is to keep it moving. From the first passengers checking in every morning to the last flight of the day, every journey relies on the systems we look after and maintain.

More than maintenance

Yes, we service equipment both planned and reactive, however the role goes much further. As engineers, we are problem solvers, project subject matter experts, and continuous improvers.

On any given shift, our team will be:

  • Troubleshooting the baggage system to keep bags flowing.
  • Maintaining the runway lights that guide aircraft safely in all weather.
  • Keeping the security hall systems running smoothly for passengers.
  • Monitoring HVAC systems that protect critical IT infrastructure.
  • Looking after lifts, doors, and other campus infrastructure.
  • Supporting sustainability by maintaining our solar and energy systems.
  • Developing our campus growth by supporting our capital projects.

Why we love it

The role of an Engineering Technician at Edinburgh airport is demanding, varied, and hugely rewarding, but some of the main enjoyments of the role are the constant learning and developing, and working as a team.

No two days are the same at the airport, and the challenges are constant. But the feeling of seeing millions of people embark on their journeys, knowing you played a vital role behind the scenes, is incredibly rewarding.

The airport is a place for all, and we have roles for all. So come and be part of it!
