We know you will have questions about the application process for Aviation Security Officer, so we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions below to help you. If you can’t find the answer though, please feel free to get in touch with us at [email protected]
What information do I need for the online application form?
We recommend having the following information to hand before you start, to make things as quick and easy as possible:
- Up-to-date CV
- Tailored cover letter, detailing why you wish to apply
- Referee details- the names and contact details for previous employers and schools, colleges or universities
- Gap details- if you weren’t working or studying for a period of more than 28 days, don’t worry. We just need the details of your job centre or a friend/neighbour that can confirm what you were doing in this time, but no family members please
- 5-year address history
- Valid passport or driving licence
How long does the process typically take?
From point of application to starting your training, it can take 4-6 weeks. We recommend reviewing our process which explains what is involved and why it takes this time. If our next training course is full, we may need to book you on to a later one where there is availability.
Why do I need to have background checks done?
Aviation Security Officer is a Civil Aviation Authority regulated role which requires you to hold an airside pass. It is a critical role which ensures the safety of both our passengers and staff. You need to have this pass before you can start training for the role.
What happens if I fail training?
You will be required to successfully complete all training elements before progressing into the live security operation. In the event of a failed assessment you will be permitted to re-sit the assessment with no more than two further attempts. Our experienced and highly knowledgeable trainers will provide feedback on your performance as well as coaching before each re-sit attempt. After the third attempt, unfortunately we can’t take you further on your Aviation Security journey, however where possible we will try our best to refer you to another suitable role on campus.
I don’t have an SIA licence. Can I still apply?
Yes, we encourage you to apply! As we provide you with full training for the role, no prior experience in Security is required and you do not need to hold an SIA licence. We value diversity of thought and experience at the airport, so we’re looking for people from all backgrounds and experiences, but especially if you have worked in a customer facing role.
I’m currently a student and would like to work during the holidays. Can I apply?
Aviation Security Officer is a great role to start your career in the airport. We value young people in our workforce, so will be trialling a tailored roster option for students where you could work part-time during term time and full-time during holidays.
Are there progression opportunities?
We are passionate about developing our staff, and we will give you opportunities to progress your career. Whether this is within the Security Team or to another team within the airport campus, we will do what we can to give you secondment and training opportunities. We have lots of examples of staff progressing from their first role in Security, hear from them here.
